About the role

The District Manager Closure, Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) a will manage several large mine remediation projects to focus on repurposing thinking, reducing the legacy asset provision and reducing the size of the legacy asset portfolio ultimately.

This role will suit a passionate professional with an environmental and projects background with an engaging personal style enabling you to interact effectively with the Legacy Management team as well as internal and external stakeholders. High energy, self-motivation, and ability to solve complex issues will ensure success in this role.

Reporting to the Closure GM for the EMEA portfolio, and working in a collaborative environment, you will be responsible for:

  • Project management incorporating appropriate elements of Rio Tinto (RT)
  • Implementation of Critical Risk Management and Zero Harm within all projects
  • Assessing and managing Business and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) risks
  • Negotiate legal site cleanup agreements with various regulatory Agencies
  • Negotiate commercial and legal agreements with site owners and other stakeholders, working closely with RT Legal
  • Responsible for external affairs related to projects, including government and stakeholder management and community engagement
  • Engage and oversee multiple consultants and contractors to complete investigations, analysis and execution of remedial projects, while minimizing risks to the organization
  • Work with internal and external parties in development of strategic plans for completion of site obligations.
  • Where possible, provide a clean exit with no lingering liabilities for Rio Tinto

What you’ll bring

A combination of skills and experience will be considered if you have:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with EMEA environmental regulations
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with safety regulations including mine safety and health administration, occupational safety, as well as Rio Tinto HSE Performance and Management Standards
  • Knowledge and experience in conducting remediation projects using Project Management skills consistent with RT Projects PM+
  • Knowledge and experience in RT governance processes;
  • Technical expertise in human health and ecological risk assessment, hydrology, geochemistry, biology, and engineering
  • Experience in assessing and managing Business and HSE risks consistent with RT Risk Guidance
  • Experience in regulatory negotiation for remedial cleanups at all levels
  • Experience in community engagement and stakeholder management
