Within our Legal department, we are looking for a Legal Counsel Data Protection.
This is a permanent role and can be located in any of the EU countries where we have a Galapagos entity (see hereunder).
Your role
- Proactively participate and contribute to Galapagos’ global data protection program and data protection initiatives
- Independently monitor that Galapagos is executing operations in compliance with European regulatory laws related to the processing of personal data such as the GDPR, e-Privacy Directive, Clinical Trials Regulation and associated local laws
- Be responsible for and oversee the on-the-job data protection activities
- Contribute to awareness-raising on data protection throughout Galapagos, educate the business on important data protection compliance requirements and ensure alignment globally on data protection matters
- Draft, monitor, review and update policies and standards, review agreements and contribute to the development of template agreements
- Provide strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders on specific data protection business questions
- Maintain the records of data processing activities for the headquarters
- Engage with and autonomously advise other focus areas (research, development, commercial & medical affairs, shared services, including the ITS team) and builds strong, collaborative relationships
- Report to and work closely with the Data Protection Officer
Job requirements
Who are you ?
- Master’s degree in law
- With an additional degree in data protection (e.g., LLM or Postgraduate education) or data protection certification (e.g., CIPP, or CIPT from IAPP or a similar accredited body) is preferable
- At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in data protection, preferably in an international law firm or in an in-house counsel role
- Knowledge of personal data processing operations in life sciences is an asset
- Pragmatic and able to think in terms of possibilities and opportunities
- Ability to work independently, well organized, independent and innovative
- Excellent and confident presentational skills, both written and oral
- Good communicator, has persuasive power and is a true team player
- Able to work under time pressure
- Excellent command (both oral and written) of English – a good command of French and/or Dutch is an asset but not mandatory.
- Living in one of the EU countries where we have a Galapagos entity: Benelux / France / UK / IRE / Germany / Italy / Spain / Nordics / Austria / Switzerland.
